Fond Memories of The BYU Creamery
Believe it or not, some of my fondest memories of my university attending years were while I worked at the Creamery on campus at Brigham Young University. Most of my tasks involved cleaning of equipment, dismantling equipment or reassembling equipment, which had its cool moments, but not necessarily what made it so memorable. I worked with some very cool people, and we were able to have a lot of fun while we worked.
Everyone wore the white milkman style clothing for work, so it didn’t matter if we got wet or messy because when we were done, we could just change. The rooms were water tight including the flooring which was either tile or rubber flooring over the cement. We wore these cool rubber boots too. There were large hoses in various places around the facility for use in our work. All of this together made for great water fights. Sometimes we would gang up on a sorry soul, or compete in teams. I admit that I was often the less soaked in the crowd.
Near the large vats used to make food products there was a monster hose about three inches in diameter. It was used to fill the tanks with water fast. Nearby was the pasteurizer that has a bunch of winding pipes. I took the hose to the back side and wove it in the pipes so that it was perfectly positioned to soak whoever would walk by on the other side. I went over to the valve where the water turned on and waited for my soon to be soaked victim. Along came Jim. He is quite a large guy and was perfect for this trap. As he got close I pulled on the lever to turn on the water. From the end of the hose came a loud burping sound and scared him to death allowing him to jump out of the way before a jet of water would have laid him flat. It was probably a good thing I didn’t hit him, but the way it happened was sure funny. I miss those days.
