Remodeling in the Salt Lake City Area

If you live in or around Salt Lake City, remodeling can be fun, affordable and easy. Many people in Utah have families that spend most of their time at home, so making it beautiful and comfortable place to be is a high priority.

My family has done a lot of remodeling. In fact, we have changed at least one room in every home we have owned. Remodeling is a great way to create more space in your home, put your own signature on a house and make things just the way you want them to be. It also makes older, grungy places look new and clean.

As often as we have remodeled different homes, the changes rarely involved new additions though. After all, extending a house often requires new walls and roofing, a new foundation and a little bit of re-landscaping as well. With so many basics to cover when you add an addition, expenses can get pretty high before you even start choosing paint, flooring and furniture.

This is why I would recommend starting with spaces that already exist. Unfinished basements are probably the easiest areas to remodel because they are often large and empty. For someone who wants to expand the livable space in their home, basements are like a blank canvas ready for new designs. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a couple more bedrooms, another bathroom, a home theater, an extra kitchen, or a play room where the kids could be rambunctious and you won’t be able to hear the ruckus as much?

Before you start any remodeling in the basement, there are a couple things to think about though. The first and most important issue is water control. If you are going to invest time and money into finishing a basement, you want to make sure that water won’t get into that area and ruin the finished product. Water in the basement will damage building materials like dry wall, carpets and wood floors and it will also cultivate mold which smells bad and can damage your health. An experienced contractor can suggest the right water control steps to meet your needs. These may include better draining around the house, sealant, heating and proper ventilation. Once you are sure that the basement is dry, you can start deciding what you want to build in the new space.

Even though finishing a basement usually only costs one third the price of building an addition, tackling an entire floor of your house may not be possible on your budget. If that is the case, start somewhere else. It can be a job as small as remodeling the bathroom. Small jobs can be a great way to test out contractors too. For example, if you want to finish a space as large as the basement, you can test their services on smaller jobs first. If they are capable of remodeling one space, you can be confident that they will do just as well in the next job.

Downstairs Done Right is one company in Utah that can meet all your contracting needs. They service the entire Wasatch area, including Salt Lake City, with remodeling and finishing expertise. They can handle any job you want to start whether it includes an addition, remodeling the kitchen or finishing the entire basement. Three things that I really like about their service are their up-front pricing, their dedication to finishing the job on time and their one-year guarantee on all the projects they complete.

This makes it easy to plan a budget, keep to a schedule and be sure that your contractor will deliver quality work.

No matter who you choose to help remodel your home, remember to have some fun during the process. Don’t let all the decisions about paint, light fixtures, door knobs, carpets and more overwhelm you. It is possible to enjoy both the process and the finished product. Good luck!
