Disability Insurance in New England

One again our eyes turn to health today as we talk about Disability Insurance options in New England.

Insurance is one of those things that it’s important to get right because if you don’t pick your policy carefully and you don’t have an agent you can trust you can get totally ripped off.

Recently one of my friends had a car accident and watching him wrestle with his insurance company was quite the lesson on trusting companies to look out for your best interest.

Looking on New England Disability’s website does, however, inspire confidence. They talk about some of the important aspects of disability insurance policies.

Types of Disability Insurance

Just to talk about it briefly there are two main qualifiers for collecting on your policy. These are “Own Occupation” or “Total Disability.” The difference is very simple, with “total disability” coverage anytime you become totally disabled your insurance policy must payout. If you retain any ability to continue to work, in any domain, the insurance company will not pay.

“Own Occupation” insurance is quite a bit better. This means that any accident that leaves you unable to work at your job will force a payout from the insurance company. So, if you were, for instance, a high school spanish teacher and you burned your tounge to the point where you could no longer speak spanish you would be covered by “Own Occupation” disability insurance but not by “Total Disability” coverage.

All this kind of information can be obtained from their site and they have a few other convenient tools to help you better understand insurance. Check out the explanation of disability benefits for more comprehensive information regarding how disability insurance works.
