The Types of Floor Underlayment and The Roles They Play
Many times people have to decide about the floor underlayment which is appropriate for the installation of laminate flooring. In the past, it was not so hard to decide, but since technology has evolved and more complex types have appeared, people have a hard time deciding.
Usually underlayment is necessary to be installed for various types of laminate flooring or engineered real wood flooring. It is not installed under the sub-floor, but over it and just the flooring is put together over the underlayment. The role of this material is to hide the imperfections that the sub-floor may have, to eliminate the noise made when people are walking on the ground and to give a soft feeling to the room bottom.
The recommended type of underlayment is different for each flooring type. This is decided by the manufacturer of every flooring type in particular. In general, there are four types: standard foam type, a combination between foam and film, the closed-cell type and the modified/upgraded one.
The standard foam type is the most commonly used. Even if its name is different for every manufacturer, it is actually the same thing for all. These ones do not have moisture barriers and because of this they are used where there is no moisture on the sub-floor. They can also be used on concrete.
The combination of foam and film is a standard foam type that has a moisture barrier, but only on one side. It is utilized in all the floors that can have moisture in the sub-floor. It has become rare in our times, most of the manufacturers do not offer this combined type and those who offer it are making them from standard types. Their quality is deceiving.
The closed-cell type has closed cell foam and a moisture barrier. It is not based on any standard type, but is a unique type, very different from the others. It has technology implemented in order to avoid sounds, echoes, is cheaper and is highly versatile. This type can be used on plywood and concrete sub-floors.
The modified or upgraded type is thicker than the standard foam type. The foam from which they are built has a high density. They can be made from high density foam, rubber, closed-cell or fiber. The role of this type is eliminating the sounds generated by the standard foam type. It has the same ability to hide imperfections like standard and combined types. Because of their ability to eliminate sound, their use best fits second floors or higher levels. They do not offer a better comfort, just a noise reduction.
When a floor underlayment is chosen the best recommendation is to buy the type which is approved by the manufacturer according to the types owned by the buyers. These four types of underlayment are the base ones; there are others also, like the cork type. It is made from cork and is good for moisture and it is used in the majority of floors. Anyhow, people must do some research before buying any of these types.
